Controversial personalities are usually temporary in their fame. Even within the realm of culture, aim for those things that are long lasting, those things that show permanence. If people are still listening to J.S. Bach after hundreds of years, then you should probably be listening to J.S. Bach from time to time. It is those things that change people for good generation after generation that are the most worth pursuing.
